Alcohol detoxification is the essential first step to a life of sobriety. Alcohol withdrawal is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition which can begin as soon as two hours after the last drink. During an alcohol detox at the sub-acute level, medications can be prescribed that make the detox more comfortable and safer for the individual. These medications can assist with making the transition softer when compared to an abrupt cessation from drinking. For individuals who have been drinking heavily for weeks, months or years, alcohol withdrawal symptoms can rapidly intensify. It is imperative to seek help even when symptoms seem mild at first.
Alcohol Addiction Detox Center Timeline
The length of detox depends on the severity, tolerance, and symptoms of withdrawal. If a client has a severe alcohol addiction that’s been going on for years, he or she will require more care and intervention. At Remedy Detox Centers, we treat each client individually and collaborate with our clients to ensure a successful detox is completed. As a general rule, though, the minimum time for detox is three days.
On average, our clients spend three to 10 days with us before going on to an inpatient or outpatient treatment facility. Some clients will spend longer than 10 days with us, though, if their withdrawal symptoms have not subsided.
Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms / Medication
Clients often come to us because they know it’s safer to undergo alcohol withdrawal in a medically supervised facility. Medical professionals will never recommend trying to detox from alcohol at home, for a number of reasons. The primary reason is that it can be not only dangerous but deadly. Some of the most severe alcohol withdrawal symptoms include:
- Intense anxiety
- Gastrointestinal issues
- Delirium Tremens (DT)
Medications may be prescribed in small amounts to help with craving and withdrawal symptoms. Our addiction specialized physician will access each of our clients individually to decide if medications are the right fit.
The continuum of treatment and comprehensive care given at Remedy Detox ensures our clients can begin building the tools necessary to sustain sobriety and success in long-term recovery.
